Freedom.

Webster’s Dictionary has several definitions, including the “absence of subjection to foreign domination or despotic government” and “the state of not being enslaved.”

Fourth of July has traditionally recognized the victory in the Revolutionary War that led to freedom from English rule. In recent years, this celebration has been met with scrutiny as more and more Americans question if America truly offers equality for all.

However, Webster’s also defines freedom as “the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.”

While news events cast doubt on our ability to act or speak freely, each of us has the power to THINK without hindrance or restraint. Regardless of what we see in the news or on social media and what we hear from our politicians, friends, or families – WE hold the power to think critically, analyze assumptions, and draw our own conclusions.

On this Independence Day, I encourage all of my fellow Americans to embrace freedom of thought.

Our society is a constant work in progress, and each of us has the power to make change for the better. If each of us becomes the change we wish to see, that transformation will be a Revolution.
